Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

"Sorry, didn't quite factor in your little tiff with Guardian tech in the heat of the moment. It's a bit of an oddball detail, isn’t it? But give me some time, and I'll get my head around it and remember. Other than that, we're all set. The Type-6 might not be the most comfy ship there is, but she's got enough room for your fancy curves - and no, you won't have to squeeze through the cargo hatch. Sure, the lavish style of the Imps would've been more comfy than that... but a Cutter would’ve been too flashy for our little escapade."

Damn, slipped my mind, that did. Been fascinated by Guardian stuff since I was knee-high, always wondering about the potential of this particular technology. In my defense, we haven't exactly been working together for long. But the thought of more wild rides together was starting to grow on me.

"Nice gadget, this personal computer," I nodded appreciatively.

"Never heard a peep about this 'Howarth Engineering'. You reckon we should chase down this lead? If it's a publicly accessible place, showing up won't raise any eyebrows. Might be worth a nosy around there. Next we can jet from there to the Musashi. Makes our little jaunt seem a tad more legit, don't you think?"

“Just give me a moment to look …”

I turned on my computer again and ran an external search query for ‘Howarth Engineering’ in Xi Wangda. And I got an exact match, belonged to them too.

“Well… if this is accurate, it is a public ground outpost they have held on to since taking system control. Like the captive said. And, lost a few others in that process. So maybe we could find a thing, or two, there, too. But doubtful, they have hidden anything major there except useful data for us.”

“… and you will have to go out there, alone. I may not be very subtle… maybe, with the disguise, but I have been avoiding to go to an Azimuth ground site in person, for… very good reason. I can just, watch the ship, maybe. I don’t know.”

I thought about it a little more.

“Or, I could stay inside, and if you plug me in… fetch some useful stuff. Maybe some kind of access code or at least more to hide the real identity of the ship… in case, Azimuth security decides to run a deep scan.”

And, to finish things off…

“But I will convince myself, on if I fit into those corridors. You do not have a big breast, or hips which spread beyond your shoulders.”

Lambast MercyAfter sending the reply, Lambast absorbed the message she had received. He'd stated Dalton Gateway, and the place where he used to work before he got wings. Why would he go home after all this time incognito? He would cover his tracks if he wasn't too waisted to remember he should, but going back to a place everyone knew he was conneted to was a strage move for Maul, even if he was stoned out of his skull.

The ping rang out from the data slate informing Maul of an incoming message. He sat the strawberry milkshake he had ordered down and turned his attention to the message.

He'd have felt offended by Lambast's assumptions if they hadn't rang true to his past interactions with her. Trouble followed Maul wherever he went, but only because he'd personally invite it along for the ride. Lambast had always been there to help him escape whatever troubles followed him, and for that he was thankful, even if he hadn't realized it before.

Nothing like that. Just a bit lost lately. Thought I might find myself here.

His body shuddered in protest after he sent the message. It was one thing to ask for help in combat situations or during financial struggles but this was new territory for him. Repression of his emotions had become second nature during these last few years, it would take time and practice to change things.

"Take a breath, take a step, and break the cycle." He said under his breath, reciting the words his mother would say to calm him as a child.

"Oh no, he's having feelings"

She said it quietly, but the mic was live, so she could talk to the rest of her squad.

"Yeah" said Dash "All that grunting and groaning, and you didn't even have a cigarette with me after. I feel hurt"

She hadn't missed banter with squaddies, however that was all part of the job description. Ignoring the innuendo and insinuation that Dash and the boss were more than just work friends, Lambast considered the weight of Mauls last message. Every now and then, during the occasions Lamb would have to go fetch Maul, if he wasn't in his room 'resting' as if Lambast didn't know that meant getting wasted, Maul would corner her in the galley, or the cockpit and try to have a heart-to-heart with her.

She had no idea why he would; she always had the same answer for him and made it abundantly clear, she didn't care about his current inward crisis. As far as she was concerned, Maul was Maul. Self-distructive, guilt-ridden and unreliable. The real question was why she could not only put up with him, but actually liked the man.

If he wanted a shoulder, he should call his sort-of-girlfriend Vega. She was soppy enough to put up with his sob stories, and care about his feelings. On the other hand, Maul probably didn't want to appear wounded in front of her. Lambast supposed she was a good sounding board, so Maul could present a better face to other people.

Right now, three carriers full of raiders, her own personal carrier, and a rather nice gentleman that could be of great use to Lambast and her plans to build a town were waiting to see if she could deliver on her reputation as a boarding action savaunt. A powerful man on her home planet was waiting for news of his missing son, or her town and its spaceport would remain a dream.

Not to mention Kai and Phresh had come to help out, and Phresh had come from Colonia because Lambast had asked; and offered a large sum of credits. On the other hand, there was Maul having some feelings.

"Madam, Destinies Jester and the Löwe have engaged the Anansi"

"What?" asked Lambast coming back to the now thanks to the communication from Thunderchild's captain.

"Destinies Jester madam, its here with more than just an attack fleet. They have set up interdiction zones and have the Anansi heavily out gunned"

A carrier wide announcement informed the rest of her squad that the fight was almost upon them.

"Oh, yes. Um, have navigation share data with the other captains to cogitate a bypass jump solution. This is all expected, the Anansi will hold out as long as we get that jump solution fast" said Lambast still thinking of the Maul situation.

"Madam, are we still going to engage? The IS are involved, it could go very badly for us"

"Yes captain, wait for our que as discussed. Fire on the Jesters forces and their allies only, evade IS ships. Contact legal and let them know what could be coming. They'll come up with something to protect us. Make sure they know this is all my idea. Tell them I forced you if you must captain. Now then, what fast ships have I got ready to go? Something with an extra bunk"

"Madam?"

"Fast ships captain, with an extra cabin. Chop chop"

"Er, La'bast 24 madam. Your Mamba?"

"Good god no! That thing has terrible jump range. What else?"

"The two Cool Hands, and .. .. your Deep Core ships, if you have time to have a cabin fitted in your mining vessels. Everything else is either being refitted with the new OC FSD's or in dry dock awaiting FSD mods"

"Oh fine. Have the La'bast made ready and pack Maul's things in the extra cabin. I'm on my way now. What pad?"

"Oh, Mr Montresor. I'll have the galley stock accordingly. And the boarding operation madam?"

There was a time when she could have three extra crisis added to her plate before she'd get a little forgetful, but she'd been trying to live the peaceful life for quite a while now.

"Yes. Dash, congratulations, your mission leader now. I have to go"

She could feel the squads eyes on her as she walk out the prep room of the drop ship. Maybe they were thinking she'd lost her bottle for a fight, or was running away from the situation she had dropped everyone in. What ever the case, she didn't care. One of the few people she honestly liked had asked for her.

She'd let Kai and Phresh know once she was in the Mamba, and think of something to say to Vasil after that. As she walked, she typed a message for Maul.

Maul read the message and felt a wave of relief wash over him. He'd came to his home station to visit his parents remains for the very first time at the columbarium. Years were spent trying to forget about what had happened to them with the aid of every drug or adrenaline rush he could subject himself to. Change wasn't going to be easy, but acceptance of his past seemed the best first step in that direction, a step he couldn't take alone.

Lambast was always very straight forward with Maul and he needed someone like that now more than ever. He'd had enough with the delusions and distractions, reality had to be faced to be comprehended. He though it would perhaps be best to do it with the closest thing to family he had left. Someone who'd known him before everything changed, before being a pilot among the stars, before being framed for murder, before the drugs, before he became the thing he never wanted to be.

He relaxed again and slid the hood off of his very buzzed head and rubbed his hand across the the small prickly hair on the top of his head. A sullen look engulfed his face. Gone was the vibrant green mohawk he'd sported around for a near decade.

"Change has gotta start somewhere...I guess" he said to himself, shaking his head.
09 May 2024, 10:11pm
Lambast slowly flew towards the slot of Dalton Gateway watching the giant agricultural ring roll by over head. Fields of green and gold wheeled by periodically marshalled by monolithic high rises that almost reached the impossibly thick glass encasing the ring. She intently followed any road that lead to what looked like a memorial park, one of the places she had a chance of running into Maul.

She imagined shed see his silly hair cut, or more likely a top down view of his hood, but in reality she could hardly make out the roads from this distance. Suddenly, proximity alarms sounded, and warning lights flashed all round the cockpit. Her view of the ring was eclipsed by one of Saud Kruger's finest, as it's impatient pilot shield checked Lambast's Mamba.

Harsh German bounced around Lamb's head as the liners pilot gave his opinion of her, holding nothing back. Lambast knew the German language very well, and understood every curse, insult and oath of violence the man offered her. Holly wasn't installed in the La'bast 24, and neither was Nuralwear processor interface software, so she made a note of the ships name and the pilot, Eric De Haas, on her pad and proceeded to land. She was here for Maul, not confronting mouthy Saud Kruger pilots. That was a hobby.

After struggling out of her heavy boarding armour and changing into a casual clothes, still in her signature colours, but blue with white accents this time, Lambast when to the most likely place to find her wayward friend. The large ring had a high rotation rate, and simulated a little more than one G. Having been in space for months, the Coriolis effect was playing havoc with Lamb's balance, so she took a moment to compose her self before she entered the Space Bar. That gave her time to look up at the sign above the bar, and she let out an "Ohhh" of realisation.

It was the Spacebar, like the space bar on a key board. For years she had the opinion that the person that named Maul's watering hole had less imagination than the pests they sprayed the crops for. Now she knew better.

Inside was full of farm hands and cargo haulers, but a fair amount of what Lamb would call coffee shop surfers looked at home here too. She had imagined finding Maul would be easy. Look for the dark cloud with a green mohican under it. She couldn't find one, and hiding sullenly in one's hoodie didn't seem to be in fashion either. If it wasn't for thin knarled fingers gripping a bright pink drink connected to a face full of tattoos, Lambast would have left thinking Maul wasn't here.

"Mister Montresor, you look. Different. I am pleased to see you" Said Lambast slipping into the booth opposite Maul.

He looked up from his data slate to see who had just sat down in front of him. When he realized it was Lambast, his lips began forming a half grin whilst still wrapped around the straw.

“Wow, that’s record time Lamb, I’m just now starting my second shake.” He signaled the bartender to bring another shake to the table for his friend.

“It’s good to see you again too. Pardon my appearance, I’ve not been my best self as of late.”

He looked his friend over, taking note that she’d had some minor tweaks to her own appearance.

“Look at you though, you look great. I like the new eyes, contacts or something more permanent?”

Small talk was hard when a layer of tension had been draped over the entire exchange. He wasn’t quite sure how to apologize for his sudden disappearance yet and was attempting to buy time until he had the correct words in mind and in the correct order.

“Well, now that everything’s prepped and ready, I’ll just summon the Type-6 over so you can take a gander for yourself,” I said while connecting to my carrier which was staying close to the Abode.

“The ship will dock shortly. I hope you’ll find everything to your liking.”

I turned my attention back to the mission at hand.

“Look, it’s crystal clear you can’t set foot off the ship once we land, given you’re as inconspicuous as a neon sign. So plugging you in sounds like a good idea… in addition to what you already said you could eavesdrop on the local comms, or scan one of those landed ships - perhaps you will find something interesting. Meanwhile, I’ll take a little stroll around the base.”

I paused, tapping my finger on the table, lost in thought.

“Correct me if I’m wrong, but there’s a good chance this ground site might turn out to be a dud. We don’t have any solid leads pointing to it… The cargo I found at the outpost I infiltrated was clearly destined for the Musashi. So, as things stand, I reckon it’s not worth taking a big gamble on the ground site investigation - maybe we play it cool, acting like an ordinary trader looking to buy something on the local market. But keep your eyes peeled; anything out of the ordinary could turn out to be a goldmine for us.”
10 May 2024, 8:25am
“I will… do what I can, to keep an eye out for the, interesting things. But I will not guarantee I can find anything, other than… I also don’t believe that we will find something, only on the suspicion of an Azimuth soldier, that tried to shoot me yesterday.”

I stopped having my backside sprawled over my seating spot and began to leisurely wander around the room… with some ‘safety clearance’ to things respected.

“If there is anything worthy to be found, I am sure we will come across… something. But maybe it would be… is, better, to check thoroughly, if they are trying to ‘slip things behind the back’. But, nothing is slipping behind my back.”

What exactly had motivated me to make an inappropriate joke about my form, that was unsure, but I placed my hands on the hips below as an additional gesture… facing backward.

“And I will convince myself, if there are any corridors or doorways to squeeze, or barely fit, through, in your ship. Just do not send me into a vent. Also, I will need a suit for the flying.”

I was ready to go and walk off - to get said suit - in my mind, but waited around for a response… just in case.

“Look at you though, you look great. I like the new eyes, contacts or something more permanent?”

Lambast kept an impassive face. She'd left an important and dangerous engagement that could seriously impact her future, weather it went well or not to be here. She wasn't in the mood for chit or chat.

"I took advantage of a visit to Silver Mountian. The eyes are permanent, thank you for the compliment. Now, where have you been? I lost you after an arrest last year, and not even Vega has been able to trace you. I should think she's worried or, upset maybe? I don't know" said Lambast talking to the top of Mauls head.

There had always been a stupid green strip of hair down the middle of his head that she hated. Many was the time she had considered shaving it off while Maul was spacked out on something, but now it was gone she sort of missed it.
10 May 2024, 10:58am
“Guess I should slip into something a bit more fitting too,” I mused, eyeing my own getup. I was still decked out in my flight suit, complete with racing stripes.

“Strutting around in some over-the-top military garb is bound to stir up suspicion and put everyone on high alert. I’ll doll myself up as a trader instead…” I added.

“And you’d better have eyes not just in front, but on the sides and back too,” I joked, alluding to the previous jest and the need for vigilance. A healthy dose of caution could save your hide, especially when you know jack about the place you’re heading to.

“Go ahead and get ready then. I’ve got my gear aboard the ship that just docked; I’ll head straight there and prep myself.”

I was hoping the ship would be to her liking and that this whole operation wouldn’t get canned at the last minute. I was well aware there were comfier ships out there, but this one was the best bet for blending in with the rest. A ship that’s too pricey or big, or screams military, is just asking for prying eyes.
10 May 2024, 2:05pm
I just nodded lightly and walked off, heading back over to the hangar bays, toward my own ship. There, I pulled my preferred suit - visually - the Artemis, out, briefly contemplating its smooth, all-black appearance. It was unlikely I would need more than the protection it provided, anyway, since I'd be nice and cozy, taking up a lot of space in my big seat on the other ship... though, not quite fond of having to rely on someone else's piloting.

At least getting into that suit would be a little bit less painful than the 'Dominator' which I'd squeezed myself into, just yesterday. But only a little. And once I was done with that, everything sitting - and fitting - snugly where it was supposed to, I wandered my big body over to the Type-6 Transporter awaiting my verdict on whether it was spacious enough for my curves. In the worst case... I'd squeeze a little.

I waited outside of the entrance to the Lakon brick, giving it a somewhat displeased look-over. Never did like those ships and how they were just literal boxes of metal with thrusters attached, not that I found the other extreme end of Imperial extravagance particularly pleasing either.

Maul sat the milkshake down hard on the table and looked at Lambast with stern, tired and sober eyes. The mention of Vega felt like a knife to his heart. He didn’t know where to start on explaining the events that occurred on Sepultus Memoriae. So he settled.

“I was on a job, dug up some memories. I’ll be honest with you Lamb, I thought I was going to die…or was dead already.” He leaned forward, looking deeply into Lambasts new eyes. “I saw things there that I cannot rationalize, cannot explain. Whether it was a drug induced hallucination or reality, I do not know and do not care. It awoken something inside me that had been lying dormant for years and now suddenly I’m faced with reality, after years of trying to avoid it.”

Finally breaking eye contact and looking anywhere else but directly at Lambast, he fell back into his usual relaxed posture.

“I realized that I had been running from the past for so long that I’d forgotten why I had started running in the first place. I fucked up, and will continue to fuck up, but I have to accept the results and consequences of that.”

Maul briefly paused his near incessant rambling as the waiter brought another strawberry shake to the table. After exchanging a few pleasantries and the waiter had left the table, Maul slid the glass towards Lambast and took a deep breath before speaking again.

“I’m sorry, Lamb. I really am, but I need one more favor from you, if you will. I want to visit my parents, but can’t do it alone.”
10 May 2024, 7:36pm
She listened, but Maul was all over the place emotionally, and with the topics. At least it all seemed to lead to one place, and that place bothered Lambast.

"One, last, thing, Mister Montresor? What is going to happen I wonder? Are we going to arrive at the memorial, and I'll see a freshly dug hole. Make it quick, you'll say. Then I suppose you want me to kick your corps into the grave and fill it in before the warden sees. Is that it?"

"Hmm, no. There are a few friends I would do that for, but you are not one of them. For some unfathomable reason, I quite like having you are around"
